CACOST Head Start and Mathis ISD Announce Collaboration Efforts

May 13, 2014

Alice, Texas & Mathis, Texas – Community Action Corporation of South Texas (CACOST), and the Mathis ISD will join efforts to develop a continuum of care, education and services that allow stable, uninterrupted support to families and children.  CACOST Head Start staff and the Mathis ISD staff are coordinating services to enable Head Start classrooms be operated within the Mathis ISD community.

CACOST Head Start Program focuses on eight domains: Language Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Creative Arts, Social and Emotional Development and Physical Health and Development.  All Head Start classrooms use the OWL (Opening the World of Learning) curriculum.  In addition to focusing on these domains, the Head Start program dedicates significant efforts to involving parents in activities including multiple home visits and parent-teacher conferences.  Nutrition, mental health, health care and dental visits are also part of the program.

The collaborative effort will serve 85 children in five classrooms to support children’s optimal development readiness for school entry and success.  Head Start will provide the classroom teacher and teacher aide for each classroom.  Mathis ISD will provide classroom space, TEA Certified ISD Teacher for the 4 year old classrooms and join forces in preparing children and families for school.
